Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad Future in Doubt
04.04.2026
Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad closure has not been confirmed. Still, future operations northeast of Atlanta are uncertain. That follows layoff plans from the state-owned park and its operator for nearly 500 workers.

Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad closure remains unconfirmed
Thrive Attractions Management operates hospitality attractions at Stone Mountain Park, including the scenic railroad. Meanwhile, it has issued federally required WARN notices. They cover 497 layoffs effective June 1, as reported by WhatNow.
The layoff notice covers multiple operational and leadership positions often associated with tourist railroad operations. Also, it lists a railroad firement. There is no direct confirmation that the railroad is ending operations. Separately, the railroad’s website is not accepting reservations after a 10:40 a.m. departure. That departure is scheduled for Friday, June 5. The park’s attractions page says the upcoming season spans from March 2026 to January 2027. That leaves the reservation cutoff earlier than the season dates shown on the website.

Stone Mountain Park layoffs and railroad background
Thrive Attractions has managed the park and its facilities since 2022. Also, the park’s attractions were managed by hospitality group Herschend Family Entertainment before that. That was the case from 1998 to 2022. In addition, Thrive manages a portfolio of themed attractions, hotels, golf courses, and recreational venues.
The Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad operates former Southern Railway EMD FP7As Nos. 6143 and 6147. They wear the park’s green, yellow, and black scheme. Also, the railroad operates former Chesapeake & Ohio EMD GP7 No. 5896. It also operates a fleet of passenger cars. Today’s railroad uses an original right-of-way built to serve a rock quarry. It interchanged with the Georgia Railroad in Stone Mountain Village.
