Yevlakh–Barda line reconstruction to pause services
22.05.2026
Yevlakh–Barda line reconstruction will begin as Azerbaijan Railways prepares rehabilitation works. The works cover the central railway section linking Yevlakh and Barda. They come amid growing transport demand. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

According to Azerbaijan Railways, the Yevlakh–Barda line has not seen substantial works since 1967. Its infrastructure has been in use for almost six decades. It no longer meets modern standards. The route’s condition now limits train speeds to between 10 and 60 km/h. Once the planned rehabilitation and reconstruction are completed, operating speeds are expected to rise considerably. This will reduce passenger travel times.
Also, the works are part of wider transport infrastructure projects being implemented in the region. On 10 May 2025, Ilham Aliyev inaugurated the Aghdam Railway and Bus Terminal Complex. Its opening allowed regular passenger services to Karabakh to resume after a 30-year suspension. In addition, the Baku–Aghdam–Baku route soon became one of Azerbaijan’s busiest passenger rail services.
Modernisation of the Yevlakh–Barda line
At the same time, train services on the Baku–Aghdam–Baku route will be suspended temporarily. The change is tied to the start of Yevlakh–Barda modernisation. The project is intended to bring the railway infrastructure into line with international standards. Also, it aims to provide safer and more reliable passenger and freight transport. In addition, it is aimed at supporting faster, more sustainable and uninterrupted rail connectivity. Safety measures will also be strengthened on railway lines running through residential areas.
Railway network expansion toward Khankendi
Reconstruction of this central railway line will support the development of modern railway infrastructure. That infrastructure will extend from Yevlakh to Khankendi. Khankendi is an important city in the Karabakh region in south-west Azerbaijan. In addition, the project is intended to contribute to an integrated and modern national rail network. It is intended to improve the efficiency and coordination of regional connectivity. Passenger and freight transport services are expected to become more efficient and reliable.
Also, ADY is rapidly advancing construction of the Aghdam–Khankendi railway line. It is also advancing the Khankendi Railway and Bus Terminal Complex. The foundation stone for the Khankendi Railway and Bus Terminal Complex was laid by President Ilham Aliyev in July last year. The Aghdam–Khankendi line is expected to become the next stage in restoring passenger rail services. Those services have long been suspended on the Baku–Khankendi route.
