Container Routes Strengthen Cooperation Between Georgia and Azerbaijan

At the Kazakhstan Transport Week in Almaty, the directors of the Georgian and Azerbaijani railways signed the memorandum to start the running of scheduled container trains. The new service will join Batumi, Poti, Tbilisi, Absheron, Sumgait, and Alat.

This project plans to create a sustainable transport corridor connecting the Black and Caspian Seas. Trains run to a fixed timetable, enabling shippers to accurately plan logistics and receive prior notice of container arrival.

Moreover, the “terminal-to-door” delivery service will ensure openness and comfort throughout the transportation process. This model will be of particularly strong demand among global operators aiming at minimizing downtime and minimizing logistics costs.

Container Routes Support Environmental and Economic Efficiency

Switching freight traffic to the rail mode will relieve traffic congestion on the roads and shrink CO₂ footprints. It supports the global decarbonization objectives and adds muscle to the region’s investibility.

The Tbilisi Multimodal Terminal, which launched its first phase in June 2025, will be the major hub for the new route. The terminal incorporates the transport of rails, roads, and sea transport and facilitates quick and swift cargo handling.

Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan signed also a memorandum to improve the competitiveness of the Baku — Tbilisi — Kars line. The route is still an integral part of the Trans-Caspian Corridor connecting Europe and China with the assistance of the South Caucasus.

Specialists mention that the initiative will fortify trade connections, expand export routes diversification, and increase the region’s transit capacity. Consequently, the South Caucasus states will draw new flows of cargos and solidify their places in the world logistics.
