West Bengal rail projects announced by Indian Railways focus on better connectivity and passenger facilities. On 14 March 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Purulia–Anand Vihar Terminal Express, which will provide a direct link between West Bengal and the National Capital Region, as noted by the Press Information Bureau.

The package also includes six redeveloped stations. It also includes the Belda–Dantan third rail line. In addition, it includes Automatic Block Signalling on the Kalaikunda–Kanimohuli section.

These measures form part of a wider effort in eastern India. The programme covers the new train service, station upgrades, signalling improvements, and extra track capacity. Together, the projects are intended to strengthen connectivity. They are also intended to support smoother operations, better passenger amenities, and economic activity in West Bengal and nearby states.

West Bengal rail projects and the new Delhi link

One central announcement was the Purulia–Anand Vihar Terminal Express. It gives Purulia district direct rail access to the Delhi region. Until now, the district did not have a direct train connection to the capital.

Also, the new service is expected to make travel easier for students, workers, and families. It removes the need for multiple transfers. The train also improves links with Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

In addition, the service offers added convenience to passengers from Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. It connects a smaller district with a major urban centre. That connection supports regional mobility.

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme upgrades in West Bengal

Passenger facilities are also being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Six redeveloped railway stations in West Bengal were inaugurated in this phase. The stations are Kamakhyaguri, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum, Anara, and Siuri.

Meanwhile, these stations have been modernised with infrastructure and amenities for safer and more comfortable travel. The upgraded facilities include larger waiting halls and seating areas. They also include improved lighting and ventilation.

At the same time, the stations now have digital passenger information systems. They also have better circulation areas and platforms. Upgraded ticket counters and booking facilities are part of the works as well.

Separately, the stations include accessibility features such as lifts and ramps. Wi-Fi connectivity is also part of the upgrades. The redevelopment work also incorporates local architectural character.

For example, stations including Siuri and Barabhum reflect elements of local culture and heritage. Those elements appear alongside modern design and technology. The broader station programme is also moving ahead across the state.

Still, 101 stations in West Bengal are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The estimated cost is around Rs. 3,600 crore. Nine stations have already been completed, as DD News reported.

The plan is to develop stations as transport points and urban spaces. The focus is on better accessibility, convenience, and passenger services.

Belda–Dantan third rail line and signalling works

Another project dedicated to the nation is the third railway line between Belda and Dantan. It covers about 16 kilometres. This stretch lies on a busy corridor in Paschim Medinipur district.

Also, rail traffic on this corridor has grown steadily over the years. The additional track is expected to raise corridor capacity. It should also ease congestion and reduce delays in train movements.

In addition, the added line is expected to improve capacity for passenger and freight services. It is also expected to support better punctuality and reliability. The project should speed up the movement of goods.

Meanwhile, the line is also expected to strengthen connectivity for Paschim Medinipur and nearby areas. Faster freight movement should help local industries and agricultural markets. It should do so by improving the transport of goods.

Indian Railways has also commissioned Automatic Block Signalling between Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli. This section covers around 55 route kilometres. It serves as an important link between West Bengal and Jharkhand.

At the same time, the signalling system divides the line into multiple blocks. Automated signals control those blocks. Only one train is allowed in each block at a time.

Separately, the signal changes automatically after a train clears a block. That allows the next train to enter. The system is designed to improve safety and operational efficiency.

For example, it can allow trains to run at shorter intervals. It can also increase frequency on busy routes. In addition, it can reduce the chance of human error.

Still, for passengers, the result can mean better punctuality. It can also mean fewer delays. More reliable services are part of the expected benefit as well.

Railway investment in West Bengal and safety upgrades

Railway development in West Bengal has expanded considerably since 2014. Nearly 1,400 kilometres of new railway track have been laid in the state during this period. That has improved links between cities, towns, and rural areas.

Also, the state’s railway network has been fully electrified. Electrification supports faster and more efficient operations. It also lowers fuel consumption and reduces carbon emissions.

In addition, electrification contributes to more sustainable transport. It improves service reliability as well. It also supports the use of modern electric locomotives with better acceleration and higher speeds.

Meanwhile, safety measures have also advanced across the network. More than 500 rail flyovers and underpasses have been built in West Bengal. Their purpose is to remove level crossings and reduce accident risk.

At the same time, the Kavach Automatic Train Protection System is being rolled out on routes across the state. So far, 105 route kilometres have already been equipped with Kavach. Work is underway on another 1,041 route kilometres.

Separately, the total planned coverage is about 3,200 route kilometres. The system is intended to prevent collisions. It does so by automatically controlling speed and applying brakes when required.

Rail investment in West Bengal is also substantial. Projects worth about Rs. 93,000 crore are under implementation across the state. These include new lines, track doubling and capacity expansion, station redevelopment, safety improvements, signalling works, and electrification.

Still, funding for railway development in the state has risen sharply. The average allocation between 2009 and 2014 was Rs. 4,380 crore. The allocation for 2026–27 stands at Rs. 14,205 crore.

This increase reflects the strategic importance of the region in India’s rail network. West Bengal also serves as a gateway to the northeastern states. Rail routes through the state connect the Northeast with major population centres in northern and western India.

As a result, infrastructure improvements in West Bengal have implications beyond the state itself. They benefit passenger movement and freight operations across the wider region. Greater capacity can also support the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, and essential commodities.

Taken together, the projects launched during the Prime Minister’s visit represent a significant point in railway development across West Bengal. With new train services, upgraded stations, expanded track infrastructure, and modern signalling and safety systems, Indian Railways is seeking to build a network that is safer, faster, and more efficient. The overall emphasis remains on passenger convenience, operational improvement, and stronger regional connectivity across eastern India.
