The funding was confirmed in Washington, DC, on 28 May 2026 by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. According to the US Department of Transportation announcement, it will support structural repairs across the station and upgrades to passenger-facing areas, including the main concourse, the Amtrak lounge and ticketing zones. The same programme also covers security system upgrades and accessibility-related changes intended to make the station easier to use for families.

Washington Union Station upgrade covers passenger and structural work

The US DOT Washington Union Station investment is focused on passenger spaces and core maintenance needs. The planned scope includes roof replacement, repairs to parts of the station structure and improvements to parking facilities. The project will also focus on maintaining the building’s historic character while improving operational performance.

Sean P. Duffy described the funding as a historic investment into Union Station and connected the project with efforts to restore the nation’s capital. He said the works would support basic structural repairs and enlarged passenger concourses, while helping Washington, DC, secure a world-class transit hub for residents, commuters and tourists. As previously covered by Railway Supply, the grant is linked to a wider package of station repairs and passenger-area improvements.

Commercial space redevelopment is part of the plan

The programme also brings in redevelopment work tied to commercial space at Washington Union Station. That part of the plan covers retail areas, parking facilities, office space and digital signage, with the stated aim of increasing revenue generated from the site.

The funding forms part of the Northeast Railroad Partnership Programme, which is intended to support modernisation work at major rail infrastructure in the region. Within that framework, the Washington Union Station modernization effort brings together passenger improvements, maintenance work, security upgrades and commercial redevelopment.

Amtrak President Roger Harris said the USDOT funding represents a significant milestone in the ongoing revitalization of Washington Union Station. He added that the investment will advance key infrastructure improvements and help lay the foundation for a modern, world-class station. Amtrak is working with the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation and DOT on efforts to improve the customer experience and ensure the station can meet the needs of future generations.
