Västtågen maintenance agreement keeps Alstom with SJ
11.03.2026
As Alstom said, the Västtågen maintenance agreement keeps the company in place as SJ’s local partner for rolling stock maintenance in Western Sweden. It continues a long-running partnership around the regional fleet.

Meanwhile, Västtrafik awarded SJ the new contract to operate the fleet. As Rail Market reported, Alstom was retained under an agreement valued at slightly less than 200 million euros. The company said this will contribute to safe, reliable and high-quality rail services for passengers in the region.
Västtågen maintenance agreement starts in 2027
The new maintenance agreement will run for 11 years. It is due to start in December 2027. Before then, work will begin with a preparation phase lasting around 20 months.
In addition, Alstom’s responsibilities will expand. They will include heavy maintenance of vehicles and components. They will also cover the development and implementation of the company’s digital maintenance solutions.

“This is a confirmation of the commitment and quality that characterise our work. Together with Alstom, we have built a strong and long-term partnership that creates stable conditions for continuing to develop Västtågen and deliver reliable services for passengers,” says Helena Isaksson, CEO of SJ Götalandståg.
“We are very pleased to have been entrusted once again with responsibility for the maintenance and rolling stock development of Västtågen, the result of our strong collaboration with SJ. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to our technicians and all other employees working with this today. It is thanks to their commitment and consistently high quality of delivery that we have strengthened our position in the region,” says Mikael Granberg, Rolling Stock Maintenance for Nordics at Alstom.

Also, Alstom said the long-term nature of the contract provides a foundation for further development of its Maintenance Performance Centre in Gothenburg. The centre supports the company’s maintenance operations across the region through specialised expertise and advanced capabilities.
Separately, SJ AB subsidiary SJ Götalandståg has operated Västtågen services since 2012. Alstom has been responsible for rolling stock maintenance of the fleet for more than a decade.
At the same time, the assignment reflects Alstom’s continued focus in Sweden on sustainable mobility, operational excellence and expertise development. Still, it also covers existing rolling stock fleets and the introduction of new trains that the company will deliver during the contract period.
