Edmondson Street bridge demolition moves Inland Rail forward

In Wagga Wagga, Edmondson Street bridge demolition has advanced Inland Rail works, Rail Express reported. This activity is part of the Albury to Illabo section in New South Wales.

Still, the bridge was demolished in three sections using two 37-tonne excavators. For example, crews first removed the deck. In addition, they took apart the brick abutments. Separately, they removed the central brick pier.
New Edmondson Street bridge for double-stacked trains
As Inland Rail notes, the new Edmondson Street bridge will be built higher. It will provide enough clearance for double-stacked trains.
Also, Inland Rail said the finished structure will bring “significant benefits” for the community. At the same time, it will have a “modern and safer design”. It will also have two traffic lanes in each direction.
In addition, the project includes a more accessible pedestrian footbridge on the eastern side. Separately, it includes a new wider footpath on the western side. Road closures in Wagga Wagga are expected to remain in place for about 18 months.

Ed Walker, Inland Rail Acting Chief Operating Officer, said: “The demolition of the Edmondson Street bridge in Wagga Wagga is a significant construction achievement.
“We’re now getting on with the job of building a new, modern, bridge, and we hope the community enjoys the benefits of the new design.”
Also, he said the demolition required careful planning. He thanked everyone involved for the safe execution of the possession. “We also extend our thanks to the Wagga Wagga community for their patience and understanding while these important construction activities are carried out,” he added.
