Valley Metro light-rail expansion in Phoenix continues to attract recognition. The agency has received several awards this year for the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub project. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Valley Metro officials said the 5.5-mile extension has recorded more than 1.6 million rides. The figures came in a press release, and the line opened in June 2025. It has averaged over 6,400 boardings per day.

Awards for the Phoenix light-rail extension

Meanwhile, as Valley Metro noted, the honors received this year include two WTS awards. These are the 2026 WTS International Innovative Project Solutions award. They also include the WTS Metro Phoenix Innovative Project Solutions award. In addition, they recognize innovation and community impact. They also recognize improved access to services, employment, and opportunity.

Separately, the agency also received the 2026 Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Award. It was for leadership in advancing sustainability and strengthening Arizona’s long-term resilience. It also received the 2026 American Council of Engineering Companies’ Engineering Excellence National Grand Award. It was for outstanding engineering achievement.

Valley Metro officials said the awards were regional and national. They reflect the project’s impact on the region. They also reflect its impact on the broader transportation, engineering, and construction industries.
