Sydney Metro M1 line closures set for Southwest Metro testing
23.02.2026
Sydney Metro M1 line closures are set to increase over the coming months, with passengers urged to plan ahead as work continues to prepare for the Southwest Metro opening later this year (as outlined by Sydney Metro).

Why Sydney Metro M1 line closures are scheduled?
In addition, Sydney Metro says these shutdowns are required to carry out testing, software upgrades and integration work. The aim is to make sure the Sydenham to Bankstown section can operate seamlessly and safely alongside the existing M1 Line once services begin running.

Full line closures and replacement buses Tallawong to Chatswood
Several full line closures are scheduled: Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 February, Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 March, Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 March, and Friday 3 to Monday 6 April (Easter weekend). Separately, service updates are also shared via Transport for NSW.
During these full closures, replacement buses will run between Tallawong and Chatswood. Sydney Trains services will operate between Chatswood and Sydenham.
Partial line closures, night works and reduced frequency services
A partial line closure is planned from Saturday 28 March to Sunday 29 March. No metro services will run between Macquarie Park and Victoria Cross while Sydney Trains completes trackwork at Chatswood. Passengers are advised to use replacement buses, as Sydney Trains services will also not run at Chatswood Station during this time.
At the same time, night works from 9.50pm are planned. When they are in place, services will run to a reduced frequency between Tallawong and Sydenham, every 20 minutes. At Victoria Cross and Crows Nest, services towards Tallawong may leave from different platforms.
Further partial closures are scheduled for Sunday 1 to Wednesday 4 March and Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 March. There will also be night works from 9.50pm when no metro services will run between Central and Sydenham, with customers advised to use Sydney Trains services between Central and Sydenham.
Still, Sydney Metro says further closures will be required as the testing program continues, and the planned shutdowns have also been covered by Railway Supply. Passengers will be kept informed through transport apps, travel alerts and station announcements, and are encouraged to visit transportnsw.info to plan journeys.
When services begin operating to Bankstown in the second half of this year, the Metro network will extend 66 kilometres from Sydney’s north west, under the Sydney CBD and through to Bankstown. The line will serve 31 stations, linking some of the city’s busiest suburbs via the heart of the CBD.
