Reading & Northern passenger excursions are now available year-round, with Reading & Northern Railroad (R&N) confirming yesterday, as reported by Progressive Railroading.

Year-round excursion schedule and core destinations

Passengers can book Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania train excursions from the Reading Outer Station or the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Regional Railroad Station in Pittston. Also, tickets are priced at $39, as listed on the Reading & Northern Railroad passenger site. In addition, R&N officials said in a press release the trips will follow largely the same pattern as in prior years and that the shift to a year-round excursion schedule was made without increasing fares.

Winter 2026 schedule from Reading and Pittston

Meanwhile, the winter 2026 schedule was announced in December 2025. Trains from both Pittston and Reading will operate on Saturdays and Sundays, plus select holidays, through Sept. 20th. Following the success of last year, trains will also run on Fridays in September, and weekend trips are planned for fall and early winter in November and December.

Reading Outer Station service milestones and equipment

This year marks the 10th year passenger excursions have been offered from the Reading Outer Station at the southern end of R&N’s operating territory. The service is mainly provided using 1950s-era self-propelled diesel cars.

Pittston boarding options and the Wilkes-Barre extension plan

Separately, this will be the fourth year passengers can board at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton station in Pittston, with details on the Pittston to Jim Thorpe Excursions page. R&N also said it has plans to extend this route into Wilkes-Barre.
