06.03.2026
Škoda trains for Bulgaria are moving closer to service entry, with the first two units dispatched from the Czech Republic after completing dynamic and safety tests, as reported by RailwayPro.

These electric multiple units are the first part of a broader fleet renewal programme covering 25 modern four-car trains for the national railway system.

The project is being carried out under a contract signed in September 2024 for the supply of 25 RegioPanter multiple units, including a firm order for 20 four-car trains. A few months later, Bulgaria, through the Ministry of Transport, exercised the option for five more multiple units, as previously covered by Railway Supply. The total value, including options, is over EUR 500 million. At the same time, the agreements also provide for 15 years of maintenance services.
RegioPanter multiple units add capacity and accessibility
The new Škoda trains for Bulgaria will offer more than 300 comfortable seats, air conditioning, and low noise levels during operation. They are built for a maximum speed of 160 km/h and will run on electrified lines at 25 kV AC 50 Hz.
Passengers will benefit from ergonomic seating, air-conditioned interiors, and onboard Wi-Fi connectivity. Also, safety will be supported by an advanced video camera system installed both outside and inside the trains. In addition, the units will feature a partially lowered floor to provide full accessibility for all passengers.
For fast, safe, and convenient boarding and alighting, the trains are designed with low-level access and 1,500 mm wide doors. Meanwhile, the vehicles will also include multifunctional spaces for people with disabilities, as well as areas for strollers and bicycles.
ETCS Level 2 and Škoda Group digital technology
The new RegioPanter electric multiple units will also incorporate advanced digital technology developed by the Škoda Group to improve reliability and enhance passenger safety, according to Škoda Group. Each unit will be equipped with the ETCS Level 2 system, meeting the highest safety requirements in line with European standards.
The accessible RegioPanter electric units produced by Škoda Group are already a popular and proven model. They are in operation in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Latvia. Separately, units have recently been delivered to Estonia, where trial operations have already started.
