Hungary Reopens Dombóvár–Komló Rail Line on 1 August

HUNGARY: Passenger trains will return to the Dombóvár–Komló rail line on 1 August after a three-year suspension, cutting the regional journey to 42 minutes and restoring InterCity connections.

The MÁV Group said the Ministry of Transport and Investment ordered the restoration of passenger services on Line 47. Trains between Dombóvár and Komló were suspended in 2023 and replaced by buses.

Bz trains will run every two hours

Single-car Bz diesel multiple units will operate as S447 services. The 42-minute rail journey will be eight minutes faster than the replacement bus trip, while trains will run to a regular two-hour pattern outside the morning and evening peaks.

During the day, services will leave Dombóvár at seven minutes past each even hour and depart Komló at two minutes past each odd hour. The first train will leave Dombóvár at 4:24, while the first Komló departure will run at 5:21 to Sásd.

The timetable was developed with local organisations to provide connections at Dombóvár with Mecsek InterCity trains between Budapest and Pécs, as well as services towards Kaposvár and Baja. Passengers can check individual journeys through the MÁVPlusz journey planner.

Track works prepare Line 47 for passengers

Before the reopening, crews carried out ballast cleaning and track alignment across more than 18 km. They also repaired concrete-sleeper fastening systems at approximately 6,500 points.

Passenger information will change along the route as well. New regional display boards will be installed at stations and stops, while Komló station will receive a standardised information unit.

Mecsekpölöske halt will gain an e-paper terminal showing real-time train information. MÁV says it will be the first such display at a railway location after trials at bus stops. The screen uses little energy, remains readable in direct sunlight and refreshes only when its information changes.

Mecsek day ticket returns with the trains

The 24-hour Mecsek day ticket will return on 1 August for 1,490 forints, approximately EUR 4.1. It will cover the Dombóvár–Komló line, specified sections of the Dombóvár–Bátaszék and Budapest–Dombóvár–Pécs routes, and regional buses within the area bounded by those lines.

A reduced 400-forint fare, approximately EUR 1.1, introduced for replacement buses will remain available aboard trains until at least the end of 2026. The euro equivalents use the European Central Bank reference rate of 361.88 forints per euro on 24 July 2026.

MÁV is also promoting the Mecsek ticket for trips to the region’s mountain trails, including sections of the Hungarian Blue National Trail.
