Railway Heritage grants support 34 recipients in 2026

Railway Heritage grants from the National Railway Historical Society will support 34 recipients in the organization’s 2026 program.

The NRHS said it is awarding $187,000 in total this year. The organization has issued annual matching grants since 1991 for projects related to preserving, researching, educating or publishing railroad history.
Railway Heritage grants in 2026
Individual awards in the 2026 round range from $2,500 to $10,000, with three recipients receiving the top amount. The Center for Railroad Photography and Art in Madison, Wisconsin, will use its grant for a digital preservation program. The Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia, received support for stoker repairs on the museum’s N&W Class J No. 611. Friends of the Cumbres & Toltee Scenic Railroad in Albuquerque, New Mexico, received funding for restoration work on Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge Baggage Express Car No. 163.

Railroad history preservation projects
Other grants will support several types of rail heritage work, including repairs and refurbishment involving railroad depots, rail cars and locomotives. Funding will also go toward museum exhibit development and security improvements.
