INTERNATIONAL: Omio’s comparison of 25 European city pairs found rail faster than flying on 10 routes once airport transfers, security and other door-to-door steps are included.

The largest gap is Brussels–Paris. Omio calculated four hours 25 minutes for the full air journey and two hours five minutes by train, giving rail a 140-minute advantage. Frankfurt–Cologne followed at 132 minutes, while Madrid–Valencia showed a 110-minute saving.

Across the rest of the top 10, rail saved 100 minutes on Milan–Florence, 99 on London–Paris, 97 on Rome–Florence, 87 on Madrid–Barcelona, 86 on Paris–Lyon, 83 on London–Brussels and 80 on Madrid–Seville.

Why door-to-door time changes the comparison?

Omio’s methodology goes beyond scheduled flight duration. The company says its flight model adds a standardized 120-minute operational buffer: 60 minutes for baggage drop and security, 45 minutes for terminal navigation, customs checkpoints and boarding windows, and 15 minutes after landing for deplaning and baggage reclaim.

Airport-to-city transfers are modeled separately using the average travel time of frequent, high-capacity public transport. For rail, Omio says it uses high-speed or optimized intercity connections from its database of more than 1,000 providers and adds no equivalent security or terminal-transfer buffer, only local transit from the main arrival hall to the designated city centre.

That approach explains why a short flight can lose its apparent time advantage once the full city-to-city journey is counted.

The rail services behind the biggest gaps

On Brussels–Paris, Eurostar currently advertises direct Brussels-Midi/Zuid–Paris journeys of about one hour 22 minutes, with both stations in central urban areas. Eurostar also recommends passengers arrive 20 minutes before departure, a practical detail that sits outside Omio’s zero-buffer rail assumption.

For Frankfurt–Cologne, Deutsche Bahn timetable examples show direct ICE journeys from Frankfurt (Main) Hbf to Köln Hbf in about one hour six to seven minutes. That is close to the 63-minute train time used in Omio’s comparison, although individual timetables can vary.

The fare figures in the study are less structural. They reflect prices available for one passenger travelling in August 2026 and can change with demand, booking time and operator pricing. On journey time, however, the comparison shows how centrally located stations and lower terminal overhead can give rail a decisive advantage on shorter European routes.
