Pune Metro expansion strengthens regional links

This project costs €475 million and encompasses the extension to the north and to the south. While the expansion to the north would extend from the existing PCMC to Nigdi with four new stations, the other from the existing Swargate to Katraj will have three new stations since this journey passes through areas that are developing at a fast rate.

Corridor 1, also known as the Purple Line, started operations with the first 7 km between PCMC and Phugewadi in March 2022. Then came the next 7 km from Phugewadi to District Court in August 2023. Last year, services started between District Court and Swargate, which completes the 16.5 km route of the Purple Line spanning central Pune.

Pune Metro financing supports sustainable growth

Once finished, the Corridor 1 expansion can be fully linked with buses and regional rail transport to better enable passengers to switch between means of transport. This concept of transport integration can cut reliance on personal cars and lower carbon emissions. Better amenities and safety can be provided at rail stations.

In October, the EIB approved €289.5 million for metro projects in Nagpur and Pune — €240 million for Nagpur and €49.5 million for Pune. This complements its earlier €600 million investment covering 33.2 km of metro lines, 30 stations, and 102 metro cars.

Taken together, these initiatives illustrate the power of global funding and planning to advance India’s sustainable transport agenda and enhance mobility for urbanizing cities such as Pune.
