Why Phoenix light rail extension shelved by the council?

On Tuesday night, the Phoenix City Council voted 7–2 to shelve the proposed light rail extension. The project would have connected downtown Phoenix to the state Capitol, but the decision followed fierce political opposition from Republican state lawmakers, who said the project was too expensive, according to ABC15.

Indian School Road corridor becomes the planning focus

With the rail extension shelved, Phoenix is shifting its attention to expanding high-capacity transit options along Indian School Road in West Phoenix. In an article by Aisha Khan, Hoodline Phoenix cited the City of Phoenix in saying Valley Metro will “exit project development and the Capital Investment Grant process for the CAPEX project,” as the effort enters a new planning phase meant to include residents, business owners, and other stakeholders along the corridor.

What changes—and what stays the same?

Even as the light rail concept is being set aside, the city’s stated aim remains to bring rapid transit to West Phoenix. The next steps focus on assessing alternatives to light rail within the Indian School Road corridor, with Valley Metro stepping away from the CAPEX project’s current federal grant development track.
