NSW public transport moves to one power contract

The NSW renewable energy deal will bring the state’s public transport network under one contract. The seven-year agreement with Snowy Energy is worth 1.9 billion AUD. Transport for NSW said it will cover trains, metro, buses and light rail. It will do so under one supply arrangement for the first time. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

What the NSW renewable energy deal covers?
According to the NSW Government, the deal is expected to lower electricity costs by 130 million AUD. Also, it replaces the previous system, in which individual agencies negotiated separate electricity contracts. Meanwhile, those savings are set to be directed back into frontline transport services. Rising fuel costs continue to push more passengers towards public transport.
In addition, the government said pooled demand helped it secure better commercial terms.
Minister for Transport John Graham said:
Cost of living pressures are real for household and government budgets. This contract reduces costs and moves us towards better environmental outcomes while we deliver a reliable public transport network.
Transport uses almost as much electricity as all other government agencies in NSW combined. It’s important we use our buying power responsibly and get the best possible deal for taxpayers, which is what we have achieved.
We are planning for a sustainable future as our network continues to grow, with new Sydney Trains fleets, more metro services, thousands of emissions-free buses, and Light Rail across the city and Parramatta.

Renewable-matched electricity and network savings
Transport operations account for one of the largest energy demands in the state. They consume nearly as much electricity as all other public sector agencies combined. At the same time, renewable sources will increasingly meet this demand under the new contract. That is expected to deliver substantial environmental benefits.
The contract was awarded after a two-year competitive tender. It went to Snowy Energy, the retail arm of Snowy Hydro. It will supply renewable-matched electricity. For example, it includes energy from the Uungula Wind Farm. The project is in regional New South Wales.
Snowy Hydro Chief Executive Officer Dennis Barnes said:
The new contract with Transport for NSW indicates the demand for renewable energy solutions is growing at pace.
There has been growing interest from businesses and government agencies across the country that are looking for innovative ways to decarbonise their operations.
Transport for NSW is a large energy user and they are leading the way in their efforts to reduce emissions.
Broader plans for the New South Wales public transport network
Transport authorities have already begun reducing energy demand through complementary initiatives. These include solar installations at key maintenance facilities. At the Mortdale train depot, around 2,000 solar panels are in place. According to the NSW Government, they generate over 1,300 megawatt hours of electricity annually. They also cut emissions and reliance on grid power.
Separately, the investment also aligns with broader network expansion plans. These plans include new train fleets, more metro services and thousands of zero-emissions buses.
Fare caps are already in place. For adults, the cap is 50 AUD per week. For concessions, the cap is 25 AUD. For seniors, the cap is 2.50 AUD a day. Still, public transport remains one of the state’s most affordable and environmentally sustainable travel options.
The NSW renewable energy deal is expected to strengthen that position. It is also expected to deliver financial savings and measurable environmental gains. At the same time, demand for public transport continues to rise.
