Northern to Equip Trains with Data Collection Kits to Improve Network Maintenance
19.06.2023
Northern has unveiled its plans to install data collection kits on up to 40 trains to enhance predictive maintenance efforts on the rail network, , according to the railway portal Railway Supply, citing railway-news.
This advanced technology will enable the trains to serve as “data hoovers,” gathering crucial information about the track conditions and surrounding infrastructure, while continuing to provide public transport services.
Equipped with horizon-scanning LIDAR cameras, thermal imaging software, and HD CCTV, these trains will capture data on infrastructure defects, environmental factors, and maintenance issues.
When energy is more expensive than time!
Every night, the collected data will undergo a “digital handshake” process where it is downloaded and analyzed for further insights.
This initiative is a key component of Northern’s Intelligent Trains program, which was initially announced in 2022 in collaboration with Network Rail.
The objective is to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency in rail journeys through the implementation of this program.
Northern is currently engaged in discussions with Network Rail to secure funding for the program.
