Safety record behind the Elkhart terminal of the year

In an online “Story Yard” article, NS officials discussed the Elkhart, Indiana, terminal. They said the railroad had already recognized it for its safety culture. In addition, they linked that record to low injury reports.

They said the engineering department has gone more than five years without a reportable injury. The car team has passed the three-year mark. The locomotive team has reached nearly two years. The transportation team has logged more than 180 days.

Also, the facility has posted solid operating performance. It has shown recent gains in fluidity and capacity. Meanwhile, those results added to the safety record already outlined by NS officials. As Progressive Railroading reported, NS officials highlighted another recent result. The terminal handled more than 1,100 rail cars in a single shift. It did so without an accident. It also did so while dealing with unplanned outages beyond employees’ control.

Separately, the Class I railroad credited team coordination for that performance.

“Transportation partners closely with mechanical and engineering to make sure we’re executing as one team,” said NS Assistant Superintendent AJ Jeffers. “We reinforce a speak up culture where everyone is encouraged to raise concerns, challenge the status quo, and contribute ideas.”
