Norfolk Southern infrastructure projects exceeded $1 billion in 2025, with the railroad’s engineering team delivering upgrades across its 22-state network focused on safety, speed and resilience, as outlined in a Jan. 26 update from Norfolk Southern Story Yard.

Reporting on the same release, Progressive Railroading noted the Class I logged zero fatalities and a 27% year-over-year reduction in Federal Railroad Administration-reportable injuries.

Safety, detectors and digital inspection

On the safety side, the 2025 program included 375 grade crossing protection warning systems installed. Norfolk Southern also added 16 hot box/bearing detectors and installed 10 hot wheel detectors. Three digital train inspection portals were constructed and entered into service, according to the railroad.

Track, bridge and structure projects

Track, bridge and structure projects covered a wide span of work. Norfolk Southern replaced 517 track miles of rail, installed 2 million cross ties and surfaced 4,402 miles of track. On bridges, it replaced 27,661 bridge ties, while 84 bridges were replaced or structurally rehabilitated.

The company also summarized the scale of its testing effort: 1.56 million track miles were tested with automated track geometry measurement system locomotives, and 41,000 miles of track were tested with two geometry cars.

Communications and signals projects

Communications and signals projects last year included 28 signal cut-ins completed, 302 switch machines replaced, and 369 centralized traffic control to integrated train control and management system cut-ins completed.

“Safety is the foundation of everything we do, and our more than 5,000-strong engineering organization proved that commitment in extraordinary ways in 2025,” said Ed Boyle, Norfolk Southern’s vice president of engineering. “At the same time, we delivered exceptional infrastructure improvements through extensive planning and outstanding execution. These results show what’s possible when the skill, precision and expertise of our industry-leading railroaders come together every day.”
