Norfolk Southern derailment near Horseshoe Curve disrupts Amtrak

As reported by WJAC, Norfolk Southern derailment response efforts were underway early Saturday. Two locomotives and 17 empty railcars left the tracks near the historic Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Blair County.

A company spokesperson said the incident happened at about 12:03 a.m. on March 7, 2026. Also, Norfolk Southern confirmed that two locomotives and the 17 empty railcars derailed. No injuries were reported among the crew.

The Blair County 911 Center previously told 6 News it was not directly notified by the railroad about the derailment. Instead, it learned of the incident through its own sources. Officials also said no injuries were reported to the 911 center. Meanwhile, emergency crews responded to assist with traffic control in the area.

Norfolk Southern said there is no impact to the community at this time. At the same time, company crews are on scene working on cleanup efforts. Still, a timeline for reopening the area has not yet been determined.
Federal Railroad Administration investigation
Members of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration confirmed to 6 News that they are responding to investigate the cause of the derailment.
Amtrak Pennsylvanian service and alternate transportation
Amtrak confirmed there is alternate transportation for the Pennsylvanian service between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. Separately, Trains.com reported that the derailment led to Pennsylvanian service disruption and bus transportation arrangements for affected passengers.
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
