The milestone adds another piece to the modernisation of a major transit corridor in the MBTA network. It also sits within a wider programme to renew train control infrastructure and improve the reliability of day-to-day operations.

MBTA Red Line digital signalling supports corridor modernisation

The new digital signal system is designed to replace ageing signalling technology with modern train control equipment. An official MBTA update also presented the completed work as part of infrastructure improvements on the Red Line Ashmont branch and the Mattapan Line.

MBTA expects the upgrade to support more reliable operations and improve long-term performance on the Red Line. Phillip Eng, Interim Secretary of Transportation and General Manager of the MBTA, called the completed stage important progress in modernising the line. He said the work should improve reliability for riders, thanked MBTA crews for completing the signal, track and power upgrades, and acknowledged passengers for their patience while the work was carried out.

Red Line Ashmont branch works included track and power upgrades

The signalling work was completed together with other infrastructure improvements intended to strengthen network resilience. Between Savin Hill and Fields Corner, MBTA teams carried out track and tamping works, which allowed the authority to remove a speed restriction that had been in place since August 2025.

Power infrastructure upgrades were also completed at the Codman Yard Facility, which supplies electricity to the Mattapan Line. Related public procurement records on COMMBUYS show the wider official framework for power and infrastructure work connected with Codman Yard and the Mattapan corridor. The wider package also covered bridge and retaining wall inspections, accessibility improvements and preparatory works linked to future upgrades on the Mattapan Line Program.
