Malaysia Advances Pan-Asian Rail Link to Boost Trade
18.04.2025
Malaysia has launched a new phase in the development of the Pan-Asian Rail Link, strengthening regional logistics and expanding trade with China through enhanced railway connectivity. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Pan-Asian Rail Link to Strengthen Halal Trade
The Pan-Asian Rail Link offers Malaysia a strategic pathway to export halal goods directly to key Chinese markets such as Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. These regions have substantial Muslim populations, creating high demand for halal-certified products.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized that rail access will open significant new export opportunities. Malaysia aims to capitalize on this demand by reducing delivery times and improving supply chain reliability.
Malaysia has already initiated the ASEAN Express pilot route, a collaboration with Thailand’s State Railway and logistics firms from China. This corridor allows cargo movement from Malaysia to Chongqing in just nine days, enhancing freight efficiency and market reach.
Pan-Asian Rail Link Supports ASEAN Integration Goals
Domestically, infrastructure upgrades continue. The Johor Bahru–Padang Besar double-tracking project is set to finish by year-end. This will create a seamless dual-track network, improving cross-border movement and supporting regional trade growth.
Despite progress, regulatory barriers persist. Malaysia is actively coordinating with ASEAN counterparts to harmonize cross-border rail policies and resolve legal hurdles that hinder smooth operations.
On May 2, Loke will meet Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, to further align efforts on the Pan-Asian Rail Link and promote joint infrastructure goals.
Loke urged ASEAN nations to intensify cooperation, stating that enhanced rail links between Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and China are crucial to the region’s long-term economic integration strategy.
