Leasing Company Akiem Orders Vectron Dual Mode Locomotives
08.10.2025
Leasing firm Akiem has inked a fresh agreement with Siemens Mobility providing ten Vectron Dual Mode locomotives that will lower CO₂ emissions and increase energy efficiency in the use of the railways in freight transportation.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The deal, which was agreed on October 2, 2025, is the continuation of the agreement that was signed in 2021, under which Akiem had already bought the initial order of hybrid locomotives in mid-2025.
New Vectron Capabilities Dual Mode Operations
Vectron Dual Mode locomotives offer combined electric and diesel traction, making them compatible with non-walked and electrified paths without any interruption in service.

They have a power output of 2.4 MW under overhead wires and 2 MW on diesel, whose speed can reach up to 160 km/h. This compatibility helps the operator reduce fuel consumption, simplify paths, and enhance overall cost of operation.
Moreover, the locomotives are fitted with the ETCS safety system from Siemens, which is European railway standard-compliant. They will be running in Austria and Germany, as well as on the international corridors leading towards the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.
This flexibility boosts efficiency in global transport and more flexibility for the freight businesses.
Vectron Dual Mode Cuts Emissions and Operating Costs
says Siemens Mobility, hybrid locomotives dramatically reduce CO₂ emissions and dependency on diesel fuel. They have electric traction wherever overhead wires are in use and switch back automatically to diesel on non-electrified segments. Dual-mode technology supports the European Union’s climate neutrality and sustainable transportation ambitions.
Akiem representatives stressed that growing the fleet through hybrid locomotives will provide the company with the capability of providing more sustainable and more affordable alternatives among its customers. Once put into service, the new units will enhance performance, reliability, and fuel efficiency for the freight users.
It is the cooperation between Akiem and Siemens that exemplifies innovation in hybrid traction technology leading the way towards a greener and more competitive European future for the rail industry.
