Interoceanic Train derailment investigation report expected this week
25.01.2026
The Interoceanic Train derailment investigation is expected to produce an initial report this week, after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the issue at a Friday, Jan. 23 press conference, as reported by Trains.com.

What the initial report could clarify?
Passenger service across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec has been suspended since the Dec. 28 derailment in Veracruz, Mexico, which killed 14 passengers. Sheinbaum said the federal attorney general’s office, which is handling the case, told her its first report is due this week.

Citing El Universal, Sheinbaum said the Mexico passenger train derailment investigation must be completed before any move is made to restart the corridor. She also emphasized that the Interoceanic Train route will stay closed until a rail line safety certification process confirms the line is safe.
Rail safety certification and possible international review
Sheinbaum said the certification plan, proposed by the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency, could include an international review — a possibility also noted by Latinus. However, she said that process must wait for the “ruling and investigations” into the cause of the derailment.
International certification, she added, could offer recommendations to improve the route and help reassure the public that the line can operate safely again.
