What the Georgia Freight Rail Program covers?

As GDOT notes, the program is funded through the Georgia Locomotive Fuel Tax Program. Also, it includes three state programs. They are the Rail Enhancement Program, Rail Preservation Program and Rail Industrial Access Program.

The Locomotive Fuel Tax Program Application Guide says GFRP awards are made each year. It also says the program may support several types of work. For example, the Rail Enhancement Program may fund railways or railroad equipment. That funding may cover acquisition, leasing or improvement. Eligible items include grade crossings, rolling stock, rights of way and rail facilities. Separately, the Rail Preservation Program can support the acquisition, leasing or improvement of short lines. Under the Rail Industrial Access Program, funds may support industrial access to railroad tracks. They may also be used to construct, restructure or improve that access and related facilities.

GDOT said it will consider projects that enhance public safety and goods mobility. In addition, it will consider projects that improve trade. It will also consider economic development, air quality and land use.
