Funding will come from two sources. The first is the Grade Crossing Protection Fund. The second is the Rebuild Illinois program. Meanwhile, the approved Crossing Safety Improvement Program covers fiscal years 2027 through 2031. In addition, it includes 21 new or rebuilt highway bridges. Also, it includes six pedestrian grade separations. At the same time, the program provides 336 warning device upgrades. Separately, it covers 24 lower-cost grade crossing improvements, according to an ICC press release.

FY27 projects and grade separation work
Among the larger projects for fiscal 2027 is a $59 million project in South Elgin. It combines a grade separation with public crossing removal. It is on Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad track. That project includes $12 million from the GCPF. For example, the program also includes a $35 million grade separation in Des Plaines. It is on Union Pacific Railroad track. It is supported by $18 million in GCPF funding. Still, the fiscal 2027 list also includes a $15.5 million grade separation in Elmhurst. It is on UP track. That project is supported with $5 million from the GCPF.
