FS Italiane 5G trials target rail connectivity
04.04.2026
FS Italiane 5G trials are now underway on the HS/HC Torino–Milano Line. The testing covers an approximately 60-kilometre stretch between Turin and Greggio.

The initial tests form part of the FS Italiane Group connectivity project. They are intended to support innovation across the rail system and passenger services.
FS Italiane 5G trials in real operating conditions
The pilot infrastructure was completed in early October. Work is now underway to test network performance under real operating conditions. The assessment covers connection quality and reliability, including in tunnels and at high speeds. It is also intended to define the technological architecture for future developments.

Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of the FS Italiane Group, said:
We are testing advanced connectivity solutions along high-speed rail lines, with the aim of exploring new technological opportunities to enhance the travel experience and improve infrastructural efficiency.
FS Group TLC Programme and on-board Wi-Fi services
The wider initiative sits within the FS Group’s TLC Programme. It was set out in the 2025–2029 Strategic Plan. The programme aims to establish a higher-capacity, more reliable telecommunications infrastructure. It is intended to support increasingly advanced services.
The trial will also examine how the group’s 5G technology may improve on-board Wi-Fi services. The focus includes situations where connection stability comes into question in complex operating conditions. So far, the project has been implemented on existing RFI and TIM infrastructures. Integration is planned for five new dedicated sites.
