Ballarat Station overpass opens as upgrade ends
02.04.2026
Ballarat Station overpass is now open. The station upgrade is complete.

At Ballarat Station, the new pedestrian overpass provides stair and lift access to every platform. Also, people with a disability can cross the rail line without leaving the station. In addition, the same applies to passengers with luggage or prams.
How the Ballarat Station overpass improves access?
The structure spans 28 metres. It is wide enough for two wheelchairs or mobility scooters to pass each other. Meanwhile, this improves access for passengers with mobility needs.

Design shaped by heritage and disability input
Its design was developed in consultation with disability advocacy groups. Also, Heritage Victoria endorsed it. That reflected the community’s preference for a solution that respects the station’s heritage. At the same time, it minimises visual impact on existing buildings.
The aluminium cladding features curves inspired by the heritage ironwork on the platform canopies. Still, the perforated design improves visibility while providing shelter from the weather.
Open belvedere balconies with glass balustrades sit at the lift landings. Separately, they were designed to provide views of the clock tower and the train hall.
Northern entrance accessibility upgrades finished last year
Accessibility upgrades at the station’s northern entrance were completed last year. Additionally, they included a new ramp, stairs, handrails and an automatic swing door.
The station upgrade is now complete.
