ETCS Upgrade Transforms Class 717 Fleet and Northern City Line
09.10.2025
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) and Siemens Mobility have completed the historically significant ETCS upgrade on all 25 Class 717 trains, revamping London’s Northern City Line with fully digital in-cab communication and signalling.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

ETCS Increases Efficiency and Interoperability in Railway Activity
GTR and Siemens Mobility have completed a key act in digital rail renaissance through the ETCS refresh. The ETCS Baseline 3, Release 2 is employed between Finsbury Park and Moorgate by the Class 717 fleet.

This is the high-end version that substitues GSM-R with GPRS technology, boosting the stability in high-traffic areas. Since high-frequency service is supported, the same will be rolled out along the East Coast Main Line as part of the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP).
Northern City Line is the UK’s initial commuter track that is entirely controlled through in-cab signalling. And because engineers have eliminated trackside traditional signals, the driver is dependent on real-time data in the cab to make quicker, more secure decisions.
ETCS Enhances Security and Network Reliability
ETCS upgrade boosts network efficiency and reduces delays without new infrastructural spending. It enables closer running between trains in safety, maximizing energy consumption and increasing overall efficiency.
Siemens Mobility Infrastructure Lead, Richard Cooper, indicated that the achievement of this project confirms the readiness of the system on a mass scale. He underlined that the use of digital signalling provides smoother journeys and a more commuter-friendly experience.
This accomplishment is also a blueprint towards future conversions on the ECDP. GTR intends to apply this technology on further lines, solidifying the move towards a Networked, data-based UK Railway.
By bringing engineering accuracy and digital knowledge, GTR and Siemens are pioneering the way toward a more sustainable, safer future rail. And as ETCS is a system that controls the train in real-time, human error is diminished, as is delay.

News on railway transport, industry, and railway technologies from Railway Supply that you might have missed:
What is ETCS and why is ETCS critical in UK railways?
ETCS, the European Train Control System, is a standard digital signalling that enhances safety, boosts the number of trains per hour, and replaces trackside with cab control.
What is the ETCS upgrade advantage for passengers on Class 717?
Travel is smoother and more predictable as the computer system suppresses delays, increases protection, and fine-tunes schedule tram usage on the Northern City Line.
Is ETCS possible on other UK routes?
Yes, GTR and Siemens Mobility intends further extension of ETCS technology into additional lines under the East Coast Digital Programme, in favor of national modernization.
