The worn-out rolling stock of the state-owned railway company JSC Ukrzaliznitsa will be radically renewed within the framework of the Big Construction project. This was announced on Tuesday, November 9, by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the forum “Big construction: a new railway”, informs railway magazine Railway Supply.

“A very important new direction is starting: “New Ukrainian Railway”. We are starting the largest construction and modernization of rolling stock and railways since independence,” he said.

According to the President, within the framework of the project, there will be a program to renew the fleet of UZ freight cars until 2028. “These are tens of thousands of cars, thousands of new jobs. This is the formation of an absolutely new market with a total volume of UAH 100 billion,” he stressed.

V. Zelenskyy noted that within the framework of the rolling stock renewal project, UZ has restored cooperation with a key national enterprise Kryukovsky Railcar Building Plant.

“At this event new diesel trains are presented. Ukrzaliznitsa will receive three by the end of the year, and another 20 will be ordered for 2022-2023,” the president said.

In addition, the project provides for the renewal of the passenger car fleet. So, this year UZ will receive 20 new sleeping cars – the first out of 100 announced earlier.

“There are plans to build another 500 of these in the next 2 years. These are our 500 modern Ukrainian compartment cars, for which we really are not ashamed,” V. Zelenskyy said.

In turn, Minister of Infrastructure Alexander Kubrakov clarified that at present, the wear and tear of UZ rolling stock has reached a critical level: 90% of trains require replacement or repair, since investments in their renewal have not been made for many years. The situation is the same with locomotives.

“Starting next year, we are starting a large-scale program of reloading the freight car fleet. It’s all Ukrainian. The level of localization of freight cars is over 95%. All enterprises that are involved in this chain are all Ukrainian, starting with small companies that produce components and finishing with the supply of metal, that is, all production is carried out in Ukraine,” the minister said.

According to him, a total of 46 thousand new gondola cars and grain carriers will be purchased by 2028. A. Kubrakov also announced an increase in the volume of purchases of passenger cars for Ukrzaliznitsa.

“We have a valid contract for 100 cars, which are already being built by the Kryukovsky Railcar Building Plant. We planned (more) 500, but we talked with the plant today, we understand that it is possible to slightly increase production volumes in the next 2 years. I hope it will be about 300 a year,” said the head of the Ministry of Infrastructure.

In addition, it is planned to purchase 20 more passenger diesel trains – in addition to the 5 already contracted for UZ. Also, car builders will receive government orders for 60 new suburban electric trains, 10 new Inter-City trains

As reported, the Ministry of Infrastructure, together with UZ, plans to launch a program of gradual limitation of the service life of wagons and the construction of new wagons instead of decommissioned ones.

To this end, the Ministry of Infrastructure has developed and published a draft order on the procedure for writing off worn-out wagons.
