India is building the largest solid-rolled wheel factory in Asia for rolling stock

Indian Railways (IR) has signed a contract with the consortium of Ramkrishna Forgings and Titagarh Wagons to construct the new facility, which will have a capacity to produce 200,000 solid-rolled wheels per year, according to the railway magazine Railway Supply, citing Rollingstock.

The joint venture plans to invest INR 10 billion ($120.9 million) in creating the manufacturing facility, with production set to commence in 2025. Under the terms of the contract, the factory will supply IR with 80,000 wheels per year for a period of 20 years, totaling 1.6 million wheels for various types of rolling stock.

It is expected that the factory will manufacture wheels for Vande Bharat electric trains, as well as for the rolling stock of the high-speed Mumbai-Ahmedabad line, which is currently under construction.

Overhaul of AC and DC traction motors

Currently, solid-rolled wheels in India are produced at two factories in Bangalore and Bela, but their production capacities are insufficient to meet the growing demand.

In 2022, after IR secured significant contracts for the supply of rolling stock, an attempt was made to establish the production of solid-rolled wheels at the Ramkrishna Forgings factory. However, the investments made in the facility proved to be ineffective.
