The railway line Wroclaw – Jelenia Góra plays an important role in the system of national and local communications. A railway tunnel on this line will provide more efficient train traffic. The 19th century structure will be strengthened and expanded. Modern work technologies will be used, informs Railway Supply magazine with reference to Nakolei.

The work will include the repair of nearly 300m of the tunnel. Inside the tunnel, the stone frame will be dismantled and replaced with a stronger and more durable reinforced concrete structure. Due to the “expansion”, more trains will be able to pass through the tunnel. A simultaneous course of trains on both tracks will be possible. The renovation will include retaining walls and drainage. The tracks and traction network will be replaced.

The work is planned using modern technologies, which will maximize the line’s patency. A TEM-type machine and a tunnel-in-tunnel technology will be used. The machine allows to crush the rock material, expand the tunnel to the required size and “splash” concrete on the walls. The casing of the machine creates free space for the safe passage of trains without installing additional track fencing.

For works that will provide better communication on the Lower Silesian route, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. allocated almost PLN 85 million (net) from the state budget. The consortium will carry out the task “Revitalization of the linear tunnel at km 118.700 with associated infrastructure” within the framework of the project “Works on the railway line No. 274 Wroclaw – Zgorzelec on the section Wroclaw – Jelenia Góra and adjacent ramps” will be implemented by the consortium PORR S.A. and PORR GmbH & Co. KGaA. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2024.

The tunnel between Trzyński and Wojanów was built in the second half of the 19th century. Its length is 293 m. The object is located under the hill of Tuneleva Gora (440 m above sea level) in the Dziwiszki Hills, a few kilometers from Jelenia Góra. The tunnel is very important for passenger traffic and it also serves Sudeten quarries.
