The number of railway accidents increased compared to 2020

Based on data provided by 32 infrastructure operators in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, the International Union of Railways (UIC) has released a regular report on railway accidents. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to zdmira.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and related restrictions, the volume of passenger and freight traffic decreased significantly in early 2020, the recovery was outlined from the middle of the same year and continued in 2021, but the volume of train work did not reach the pre-pandemic level of 2019.

The previous year, 2020, continued the downward trend in such indicators as the number of serious incidents, the number of incidents with victims and the number of victims of accidents. However, in 2021 there is a change in this trend: the number of serious accidents increased by 8% compared to 2020, but was still 5% lower than the average for the period 2016-2020.
