The likely cause of the collision of freight trains in Germany was a human error
22.11.2022
According to preliminary data, a serious accident involving two freight trains in the Gifhorn district in Lower Saxony was caused by a person. The line near Leiferde was erroneously made available for use by a Deutsche Bahn employee even though a freight train had already stopped there. The federal police said the railroad worker is under investigation for violating rail traffic and unintentionally causing bodily harm. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to Kurier Kolewjowy.
There was a serious accident on the railway line between Hannover and Berlin on Thursday morning when a freight train stopped at a traffic light in Leiferd and a second freight train hit it from behind. Four wagons overturned. The contact network was damaged. The second train was carrying 25 propane tanks. The line is expected to remain closed until at least November 27, according to Deutsche Bahn.
Due to the pumping of explosive propane from tanks involved in an accident, the fire brigade had a lot of work on Monday, November 21. According to the representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, about 60 employees arrived at the scene in the morning. The first car was already half empty. It was not possible to pump out more due to the lateral position of the cars. It was decided to burn the rest of the gas in a controlled manner. The burning of propane from overturned tank cars began at 10:15 a.m. Firefighters from the Gifhorn district Fire Brigade provided constant fire protection.
