Serbia intends to invest about $ 7.7 billion (€ 6.5 billion) in the modernization and rehabilitation of the country’s railway infrastructure, reports Railway Supply magazine, citing srbija.gov.rs.

This was announced by Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic at the opening of the Western Balkans Railway Summit in 2021.

They are talking about the overhaul of about 1000 km of railway lines, improving communication within the country and with its neighbors. The Serbian government is working on design documents for a high-speed rail link between Belgrade and Nis. The project will be developed mainly with EU grants.

The construction of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad and Subotica-Szeged railway lines is also planned, and work is expected to start soon. The 2021 Western Balkans Railway Summit was held in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

The event was organized by the European Investment Bank and the international organization Transport Community. The EBRD has called for increased investment in the rail sector in the Western Balkans to improve connectivity and address climate change emergencies.
