Railway transport freight turnover in Kazakhstan increased by 3.5% at the end of 2020
An analysis of the cargo transportation industry in Kazakhstan showed that, comparing to 2019, freight turnover increased by 3.5% in 2020 and amounted to 231.8 billion ton-kilometers. Over 256.5 million tons of cargo were loaded through the network of JSC “NC“ KTZ ”, which is 1.4 million tons more than in the previous year. The range of goods transported by rail has remained virtually unchanged, informs railway magazine «Railway Supply» with reference to the press service of JSC “NC“ KTZ ”.
In particular, the loading of iron and manganese ore increased by 2% (up to 27 million tons), non-ferrous and sulfuric ore by 13% (up to 23 million tons), ferrous metals – by 10% (up to 5 million tons).
Compared to the previous year, there is a slight decrease in the volume of transportation of construction and oil cargo. 19 million tons of construction cargo were loaded, which is 94% of the 2019 figure, oil cargo – 17 million tons (92%). The factors that influenced the traffic volumes are a decrease in demand for construction materials due to the coronavirus epidemic and a drop in oil prices.
“The national carrier of goods annually fulfills plans for the transportation of socially important goods, such as grain and coal,” said Dauren Bimov, Deputy Chairman of the Board for Freight Traffic of NC KTZ JSC, General Director of KTZ-Freight Transportation LLP.
In January-December 2020, 103.2 million tons of coal were shipped, which is 700 thousand tons more than in 2019. More than 73 million tons were delivered to public utilities and the population of the country. Exported 30 million tons of solid fuel, which is 3% higher than the previous year.
More than 9 million tons of new harvest grain were transported. More than 2 million tons for domestic use and about 7 million tons for export. Kazakh grain was delivered to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, China, Russia.
The handling of milling products (including flour) increased by 5% and amounted to almost 3 million tons. About 2 million tons were exported, which is 10% more than in 2019.
LLP “KTZh-Freight Transportation” has improved the quality indicators of the use of traction rolling stock. So, compared to last year, the average daily mileage of a locomotive was increased by 1.3%. At the same time, by the end of 2020, the consumption of diesel fuel for traction of trains decreased by more than 11 thousand tons. Savings have been achieved through the implementation of energy-saving measures.
