Lombardy will purchase electric trains for the 2026 Olympics

The Lombardy region (northern Italy) approved the purchase of an additional fleet of 46 electric trains with a total value of 351 million euros. The order includes 26 high capacity Caravaggio electric trains from Hitachi Rail Italy and 20 medium capacity electric trains from Alstom. The new rolling stock is expected to be delivered in 2025 and put into service in 2026, for the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, reports Railway Supply magazine citing Railway Pro.

“The aim is to make rail transport more efficient on routes that will provide transport services to tourists visiting Lombardy on the occasion of the Olympic Games,” said Regional Infrastructure Adviser Claudia Maria Terzi.

According to the plans, 20 new trains will run between Milan, Sondrio and Tirano, 16 – on the route Milan – Bergamo – Orio airport. Another 16 electric trains will run between Milan and Malpensa International Airport.

The investment will be covered by the Lombardy region and is part of the investment related to the Olympic Games. The region’s strategy includes a fleet renewal with a total cost of EUR 2.2 billion for 222 trains, 21 of which are already in operation.

In addition, in November, Ferrovie Nord Milano signed a € 160 million contract with Alstom for the supply of 6 hydrogen fuel cell trains with an option for an additional 8 trains to be deployed on the Lombardy railway network. In addition, a contract has been signed for 61 regional Donizetti trains. Deliveries will begin in 2022.
