INTERPIPE for the development of innovative industry in Ukraine. Today, 2/3 of Ukraine’s industrial exports consist of low value-added goods, essentially raw materials. At the same time, more than half of imports to Ukraine are finished products. This is a very bad ratio.

On June 17, 2021, during the Forum of Innovative Productions organized by the Kyiv International Economic Forum, the First Deputy General Director of INTERPIPE Denis Morozov spoke about what Ukraine’s industrial policy should focus on and what challenges it faces, reports Railway Supply magazine with reference to INTERPIPE.

Ukraine’s goal should be to transform from a country with a commodity economy into a country that produces goods with high added value. To do this, it is important to develop the processing industry by pursuing sound trade policies. It is logical to process scrap in Ukraine, producing railway wheels for Deutsche Bahn high-speed trains from it. The higher the level of processing, the more taxes and jobs!

Another mechanism for the development of industry is investment in infrastructure, for example, in car building, oil and gas production, and the modernization of housing and communal services. They will have a trigger effect, which will launch entire production chains of Ukrainian producers, will give an additional increase in GDP by 2-3%.

In addition, Ukrainian industry will be forced to decarbonize. This is a serious challenge, otherwise it may lose the European market after the introduction of the “Carbon Tax”. At the same time Green Deal in Ukraine is possible.

9 years ago, INTERPIPE made the largest environmental investment in the domestic industry, investing $ 1 billion in the construction of an innovative electric steel complex “Interpipe Steel”. The new plant has closed the environmentally dirty open-hearth steel production, reduced CO2 emissions by 10 times, and today the company meets the goals of Green Deal by 2050.
