The pilot program, introduced by MTR Corporation Limited, began on Thursday and permits travel with one cat or dog per person using a required Cat/Dog Carrying Pass alongside a regular fare.

Hong Kong residents embrace pet-friendly rail pilot

To keep train rides safe and clean, MTR has set rules covering approved pet carriers, specific boarding points, and restricted pet areas. These measures aim to ensure smooth journeys and minimize discomfort for other passengers.

Ms. Yeung, a resident who joined with her dog, praised the initiative. She said it offers pet owners without private vehicles a cost-effective alternative to taxis, especially since pets stay in dedicated spaces.

Hong Kong expands public transit options for pet owners

Cheris Lee Yuen-ling, MTR’s Head of Operating and Metro Segment, stated the first day ran smoothly. She confirmed that staff have been added at busy stations, and enhanced cleaning protocols are already in place.

MTR is actively gathering feedback. Depending on public response and operational success, the trial may extend beyond its initial two-month timeline. The company is committed to balancing passenger needs and animal welfare.

This move reflects a growing shift in Hong Kong toward inclusive and modern urban transport policies. By supporting pet-friendly infrastructure, MTR aligns itself with regional trends promoting mobility for all family members, including animals.

The light rail trial only applies to specific lines in the northwestern New Territories. Pet owners must still follow all outlined guidelines to continue using the service without disruptions.

With strong public interest and operational preparation, MTR’s pilot has the potential to become a long-term feature in Hong Kong’s evolving transportation network.
