Adif and Adif AV invested record sums in rail infrastructure

Despite the coronary crisis in 2020 the Spanish operators of traditional and high-speed networks Adif and Adif Alta Velocity invested 1.9 billion euros in railway infrastructure which is 7% more than in the previous year. This is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply citing information from Adif.

Adif invested 649 million euros, which is 8.8% more than in 2019. Thus, the highest level of investment in the traditional network in the last decade has been achieved.

The main investments of Adif are projects in Catalonia, which reached 130 million euros. In the vicinity of Madrid, 27 million euros have been invested in the renovation of the track and the electrification of the Atocha – Recoletos – Chamartín tunnel.

Among the implemented projects throughout the country are the reconstruction of stations, increasing the accessibility of stations for the disabled, repair of tracks and contact networks. At the same time, significant sums – tens of millions of euros – were spent on emergency work to eliminate the consequences of hurricanes. Previously, the Spanish railway infrastructure operator Adif put up for auction a contract for the implementation of a comprehensive reconstruction of 49 km of railway track on the Gijón-Laviana section.

Adif AV’s investments reached 1.2 billion, which is 6% more compared to 2019. The main one was the construction of the high-speed line Madrid-Galicia (277 million euros). In addition, a number of other network expansion projects have been implemented.

The information notes that significant amounts were allocated from European funds – 649 million euros of such assistance were issued during 2020, compared to 109 million euros in 2019.
