Morristown and Erie Railway presented its specially marked unit at the company’s headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey. Now designated M&E 26, the locomotive was originally built as a Southern Railway MP15DC, and its new name refers to the anniversary year.

M&E also connected the locomotive’s appearance to Morristown’s place in U.S. history. George Washington set up his headquarters there during the winter of 1779-80, less than half a mile from the railway’s own headquarters.

The unit carries the phrases “Washington Headquarters” and “Crossroads of the Revolution,” which M&E officials said were chosen to reflect Morristown’s historical role. After the unveiling, M&E 26 is set to operate in regular freight service across the railway’s network and also represent the company during America 250 events through the year.

Skunk Train introduces Locomotive 1776

California Western Railroad, operated by Mendocino Railway and widely known as the Skunk Train, has also introduced a commemorative locomotive for the same anniversary. Its Locomotive 1776 was created to mark the national milestone and to present the railroad as a symbol of progress.

The Skunk Train locomotive features a United States flag design and a bald eagle. It is expected to haul most trains departing from Fort Bragg, and its appearance was influenced by earlier patriotic railroad displays, including the 1948 Freedom Train.

Robert Jason Pinoli, president and CEO of Mendocino Railway, said:

“Railroads have always played an important role in the American story,”

“As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, Locomotive 1776 serves as a reminder of where we’ve been, how far we’ve come and the enduring spirit that continues to move our country forward.”

The Skunk Train operates as a heritage freight and passenger railroad in the redwood forests of Mendocino County.

America 250 refers to the national commemoration of July 4, 2026, when the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In this case, the rail tributes are tied to operating locomotives rather than static displays: M&E identifies M&E 26 as an America 250 tribute locomotive, while the Skunk Train says Locomotive 1776 will lead most trains from Fort Bragg, including Pudding Creek Express, the Presidential Class experience aboard the Redwood and rides to Glen Blair Bar.
