Holiday rail capacity and May 1 peak

According to Xinhua, citing China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., the eight-day rush will have about 12,000 passenger trains a day on average. May 1 is expected to bring the highest volume. Passenger trips are projected at 24.5 million that day, making it the peak of the holiday period.

The railway operator said the increase in travel is being driven by demand for tourism, family visits and leisure activities.

By 8 a.m. Wednesday, China’s 12306 railway ticketing platform had sold 83.02 million tickets for the holiday period, according to China Daily.

Railway authorities are closely monitoring passenger flows and adding services dynamically to meet demand, the operator added.
