Polish leasing company Cargounit has signed a contract with Pesa to supply the first 10 electric locomotives equipped with last mile auxiliary engines, with an option to supply another 20 locomotives. Railway Supply magazine writes about this, referring to IRJ.

Gama Marathon

One of the factors that led Cargounit to choose Pesa is the speed of delivery of Gama Marathon locomotives. The first 10 locomotives are due to be delivered in February 2023, and then 10 more Gama Marathons are expected to be delivered by the end of December 2023.

“The first 20 Gama Marathon locomotives should be delivered in 2023 to meet the current high demand for modern traction,” says Cargounit president Lukasz Boron.

Gama Marathon has a traction generator driven by an auxiliary diesel, which allows the locomotive to move on non-electrified sections of the network. This allows the locomotive to haul a freight train weighing 3,200 tons. The auxiliary engine can also be used in emergency situations, allowing the locomotive to pull the train to its destination during a power outage.

“We chose Pesa locomotives because they are the perfect fit for our customers’ needs. One locomotive that can drive electric trains and then shunt in ports or terminals is a solution that not only reduces costs, but also saves time and improves transport efficiency. Using a state-of-the-art electric locomotive with an Auxiliary Power Module that complies with Stage V emission standards means reducing CO2 emissions.”
