Under a contract between CAF and Euskotren, the Basque Country’s public transport operator, nine extra-long trams will be supplied in a deal worth almost EUR 49 million, with deliveries scheduled for 2028–2029, as described by the CAF press room and in an Euskotren statement.

At 44 meters long, the new vehicles will come in a seven-module configuration. They are designed for a capacity of up to 400 passengers and will be similar in size to the extra-long trams already operating on the Vitoria-Gasteiz tram network; additional background is available from Railway Supply.

The agreement goes beyond the vehicles themselves and also covers support items tied to operations and training. Spare parts—replacement components required for maintenance—are included at a value of nearly EUR 4 million. The package also provides a driving simulator, estimated at EUR 1.19 million, for tram driver training.

Focus on comfort and universal accessibility

Passenger comfort is part of the scope as well. The new trams will incorporate a modernized air conditioning system designed to cope with periods of high temperatures.

Universal accessibility is another key element. Although the current fleet is already 100% low-floor and meets legal requirements, the new units are expected to add further measures aligned with updated accessibility criteria. These include signage adapted to universal accessibility standards, the removal of folding seats to create more fluid interior spaces, and color differentiation of priority seating for easier identification.

According to the operator, the changes are intended to ensure equal access to public transport for all passenger groups, including people with reduced mobility, the elderly, and passengers with disabilities.
