BNSF 2026 investment plan puts USD 3.6 billion behind rail infrastructure modernization in 2026, with the stated aim of boosting capacity and improving network reliability, as noted by Railway Supply. BNSF says the spending is intended to keep the network safe and prepared for anticipated customer demand as transport volumes rise.

“Our 2026 investment plan focuses on strengthening and modernizing the network so that we can meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said Katie Farmer, president and CEO of BNSF, according to a BNSF news release.

Where the BNSF 2026 investment plan money goes?

BNSF Railway, one of North America’s largest freight rail operators, says the 2026 program centers on two areas: maintenance and infrastructure work, alongside a smaller share for expansion and efficiency projects meant to support long-term performance.

Maintenance: track maintenance and rehabilitation

Most of the budget—USD 2.8 billion—is earmarked for maintenance intended to keep infrastructure in optimal condition and reduce unplanned service disruptions. Under the 2026 maintenance program, BNSF plans maintenance and rehabilitation work on approximately 13,000 miles of track, replacement of approximately 2.5 million ties, and replacement of more than 400 miles of rail. The package also includes work on ballast and other infrastructure elements, along with maintenance of rolling stock.

BNSF says investment in existing infrastructure directly contributes to increasing network capacity and improving operational performance across the network.

Expansion and efficiency projects across key terminals and yards

BNSF has allocated USD 358 million in 2026 for expansion and efficiency projects, after USD 2.6 billion invested in such projects over the past five years, as reported by Progressive Railroading.

The company lists several priorities for the year. These include completing land acquisitions and continuing development of the Barstow International Gateway project in California, as well as continuing development and beginning construction work on a future intermodal terminal in the Phoenix area.

BNSF also plans to expand capacity at the Galesburg (Illinois) and Winslow (Arizona) marshalling yards. The goal is to increase maneuvering capacity and improve asset productivity, including for railcars and locomotives.

According to BNSF, the projects are intended to support growing transportation demand and improve the network’s long-term operational efficiency.
