BKV gender pay gap and 2025 pay data

Under this methodology, negative values indicate better figures for women. Also, BKV said it has again joined the Amnesty International Hungary campaign. It is aimed at reducing the gender pay gap. In addition, the company is publishing these indicators for the sixth consecutive year. The methodology is the one applied in the United Kingdom.

Bonus data also shows a narrow difference. At the same time, 68.2% of men received bonuses. Meanwhile, 67.5% of women received bonuses. Still, the average bonus gap was -9.4%. The median bonus gap was -4.2%. These figures again indicate more favorable figures for women.

HAY model pay system and pay segments

Separately, men remain the majority across all four pay segments. Women account for 29.4% in the highest pay segment. In the next one down, their share is 16.2%. In the two lower segments, the figures are 8.8% and 22.9%, respectively.

BKV attributes these results in part to its job evaluation and pay system. It is based on the HAY model. It was introduced in 2018. According to the company, the system gives all employees access to predictable and competitive salaries. This applies regardless of gender, as BKV notes.

Women in Budapest public transport

BKV also points to a history of more than 110 years. It concerns women’s access to certain professions in Budapest public transport. For example, during World War I, women first worked as attendants on vehicles. They took over posts left vacant by men who had gone to the front.

Later, women became tram conductors. Then they became trolleybus drivers. In the metro, BKV has employed women since Budapest’s underground service began in 1970. Here, their share among drivers remains the highest. Women have also been working as bus drivers at BKV since 1979.

Today, nearly one in five BKV employees is a woman. Also, they work in vehicle operation. In addition, they hold administrative and technical roles.

These roles include:

  • human resources
  • vehicle and infrastructure engineering
  • IT
  • legal
  • dispatch
  • the lost and found department
