Birmingham Eastside Metro extension adds new stops

This new section is the first stage of the project, as West Midlands Metro notes. The new stops give passengers access to Moor Street Station and the Clayton Hotel. In addition, they serve Birmingham City University campus and Millennium Point.

The Albert Street stop also provides a direct tram link. It serves some 400,000 bus passengers each week. They use the Moor Street bus interchange. At the same time, it links bus, tram and rail there. This is the first such link in this part of the city centre.

West Midlands Metro expansion plans in east Birmingham

This is one of several West Midlands Metro projects in the east of the city. Meanwhile, work is set to continue the line to Digbeth Coach Station. Also, plans include a further extension to Birmingham City Football Club’s new Powerhouse stadium. Separately, longer-term plans would take the route to Birmingham Airport, as Railway-News reports. It would pass through East Birmingham and North Solihull.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) delivered the extension. It forms the first part of a branch route. That route branches off from the main West Midlands Metro line. That line runs between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Still, a second branch is set to be opened later this year. That will happen once trams begin running between Wednesbury and Dudley.

TfWM outlines the next phase of the route

Sandeep Shingadia, executive director of TfWM, said:

This new extension will bring people close to the places where they work, study and visit, while supporting local businesses.

It is just the beginning of a much wider transformation of our Metro network to connect more communities, open up new opportunities to help our region grow and make travel easier and more accessible for everyone.
