Under the contracts, BHP said, both railway companies will operate unit trains. They will run from Jansen to Westshore Terminals in Vancouver. Jansen is located about 90 miles from Saskatoon.
Also, the trains will use rail cars owned by BHP. The Jansen Access Spur will connect the mine with CN and CPKC mainlines.
BHP Asset President Potash Karina Gistelinck said in a press release:
“Securing rail transportation with both CN and CPKC strengthens the reliability of our supply chain and ensures we are well positioned to deliver Saskatchewan potash to global customers,”
Jansen Stage 1 production timeline
The agreements have an initial term of approximately four years. They will support Jansen Stage 1 production. Future transport arrangements are expected to align with the next phase of the project. According to BHP, production at Jansen is expected to begin in mid-2027.
