Amtrak sees normal Monday service after nor’easter hit weekend trains

Amtrak expected normal service on Monday, September 28, after nor’easter delays and weekend cancellations in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, unless storm damage to railroad infrastructure required further changes.

Amtrak’s service update, issued at 3 p.m. on September 27, said the storm was bringing high winds and heavy rain to parts of both regions. No further service adjustments were planned at that point, although passengers were told to expect delays while trains returned safely to normal operations.

The Monday outlook came with a condition. Amtrak said delays or service adjustments could still be needed if the storm damaged railroad infrastructure, and that it would reach any affected passengers directly with revised travel information.

Longer waits on the phone lines were also expected, so Amtrak pointed passengers to Amtrak.com and its app to manage trips and check Train Status. Real-time updates for the Northeast Corridor, including Acela and Northeast Regional trains, are posted by @AmtrakNECAlerts, while @AmtrakAlerts covers the rest of the network.

Weekend cancellations in the Northeast

The storm had already disrupted the timetable over the weekend. On September 26, Amtrak cancelled Train 66 between New York and Boston and Train 665 between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, citing forecast bad weather and wires down on the track in both cases.

Passengers travelling between Harrisburg and Philadelphia were warned the same day that adjustments and delays were likely while Amtrak tried to arrange alternate buses.

Weekend trains between New York and Boston had already been cut back before the nor’easter arrived. Amtrak’s passenger advisories list reduced weekend trains between the two cities from September 12 to November 1 for infrastructure improvements.
